Is Martin Muntor a villain or victim?

Can you imagine yourself rooting for a madman to succeed in a terroristic plot to kill hundreds of people? Second-hand smoke gave Martin Muntor lung cancer, and he's mad. Very mad...and he's going to do something about it.

It’s 1995, and the tobacco industry thinks it’s invincible. But is it? Muntor devises an ingenious strategy to put cigarette companies out of business, and he doesn't care how many people he has to take with him in order to do it.

Hapless private investigator Tommy Rhoads has to find Muntor, and fast. But that's not going to be so easy. Muntor's smart and has nothing to lose, and the FBI doesn't want Rhoads's help. Rhoads has a lot at stake -- personally and professionally -- and is desperate to stop the killer.

From the Author
The Death and Life of Find Virgil

Find Virgil began its strange odyssey early in 1996 when New York publisher Lyle Stuart read my manuscript, bought it, renamed it Gasp, and published it that fall. The novel spawned significant controversy and tons of hate mail. Oh, and there was an FBI investigation, possibly triggered by an unappreciative tobacco industry.

One day in 1999, my doorbell rang. It was a Special Agent of the FBI and a detective with the Upper Merion Township police department. They flashed badges and asked to come in. "What's up?" I said. The agent answered "We want the cyanide.”

After about 45 minutes of questioning at my dining room table, and my explanation of the difference between a novel and non-fiction, the agent admitted he was embarrassed. The detective apologized for bothering me. "We had no choice, we had to come," the agent said. "You and your book were reported directly to the Attorney General of the United States. We were told the book encourages people to poison cigarettes." No, I told him, it's the tobacco companies that put poison in cigarettes.

After leaving some colorful FBI-logo stickers for my toddler - and taking two hardback copies of the book (they requested I sign them) - the FBI agent and detective left. "If you get any more of those threatening letters," the agent said, "let me know." We all shook hands.

Fifteen Years Later
Years later, I returned to the manuscript to revise and rewrite. Some of the negative critiques made good points, and in the rewrite, I addressed them. I kept the mid-1990s era the same, but deepened the characters, delving into why they were doing what they were doing, and writing a little less about how they were doing it. I cut quite a bit, making the story move at an even faster pace.

We'll see what Big Tobacco thinks this time. And if they rat me out to the current Attorney General and a SWAT team shows up at my house, well ... I'll refer them to the last batch of investigators who came knocking. And I'll tell them how they shook my hand and left with their own, autographed copies of the book.

I just received this yesterday and was planning on reading it in my spare time over the next few weeks. From the moment I started reading, however, I was so transfixed and drawn into the story that I couldn't put it down until I was done! This is an extremely well written, spellbinding thriller that grabs you and won't let go. Although the events take place in the mid 90's there are numerous parallels to issues we all face today. The characters are beautifully drawn and relatable. I would be very surprised if Hollywood doesn't get ahold of this because this is a great screenplay just waiting to happen. I look forward to any future work by this author - if this is his first work the sky is the limit for his future.

Find Virgil A Novel of Revenge eBook Frank Freudberg Reviews

Woah!! This is one hell of a book!! When I read the Introduction on (the Author Review here, outlining the history of the book, I knew I had to get it. I read it zip-zip-zip on my !)

What makes it even better is that it reminded me of Arthur Hailey. Arthur Hailey, in my opinion, is the God of Detail in books. He can spin stories out of the most minute details in books and can enthrall you with how an industry works!

I found so many similarities between this book and between an Arthur Hailey. This book considers the journey of Martin Muntor through the 1990s and his self- declared war against the Tobacco Companies. I didn't fathom how many cigarettes were consumed in the USA per day! The statistics are/were staggering. People smoking poison, and people dying from simply inhaling that poison. A moot point was that, if someone dies from passive smoking, who is to be blamed? The person who smokes? Or the Tobacco Companies making millions off people who smoke? Or the Government who earns so much revenue off this poison consuming activity, to not have the firmness to shut this industry down? Debates will keep on raging. And passive smokers will keep on suffering. Who pays the cancer bills then if the Insurance Companies desert you? What if you lose social security? Should you be condemned to die, just because someone had a ciggie because it was "cool"?

The book raises important questions about social decay and also about profiteering at the expense of killing millions. Although there may not be many deaths and many smokers may not be diagnosed with cancer, it still doesn't mean that something which is so harmful, should be allowed to be propagated, expanded and allowed to grow!

The idea that Muntor has to bring down the Tobacco industry is brilliant. His demands make them bend and the company he targets, goes down on their knees. The corrupt CEO, Nick Pratt and his hitman Valzmann, show us the seedy world that exists at the top of Companies where every life is only considered important till the point it brings in revenue, profits, executive remuneration and stock bonuses. It is a selfish approach, but very true. GLOBALLY!

I felt the book would make a terrific movie. I couldn't wait to find out what happened in the end and I kept turning page after page, looking for one clue, one new twist which would lead the FBI to Muntor. One of the most essential characters was that of a Psychologist who helps Rhoades track down Muntor. Reading about this, I realised, how often we write off people who don't seem to talk in the same language as us. Even though they may hold important clues to help us evolve.

The END WAS BRILLIANT!! At that point, time stood still. I left all my work aside and kept reading, to discover and find how this epic saga ended. I felt this is a book every Smokers Association MUST HAVE!! So that they can show people who smoke, what happens.

Even though this is a fictional account, I think the author has scratched the surface of something very real. And I don't think it is a nice view!

Full 5/5 stars definitely! A MUST READ!! What a brilliant book to read as the year concludes. And you publishers missed the NEXT BIG BOOK!! Really you did!
I received a free copy from the author and his publicist in exchange for an honest review. Thank you, Frank Freudberg!
The blurb for this book reads "Can you imagine yourself rooting for a madman to succeed in a terroristic plot to kill hundreds of people?" The short answer is "yes!" When Martin Muntor gets lung cancer, without having smoked a day in his life; and starts a crazy rampage against the cigarette industry, it is hard not to root for him, even while he's murdering hundreds of innocent people. When Muntor starts indiscriminately poisoning cigarettes I kept thinking, "why don't people just quit?" Until I started thinking "what if it was soda, or chocolate, or coffee (my addictions of choice)?" then I got it. Despite being a judgmental madman, Muntor is appealing (and loves his cat, how can you not like him). His own handpicked nemesis, a retired cop called Rhoads, is also easy to root for (which makes this a conflicting book). The final part is simply suspenseful and thrilling, a ticking clock counting down to the satisfying conclusion. The one thing I didn't like was that some interesting plot points eventually didn't lead anywhere and some characters seemed to be forgotten during certain parts of the book. Still, a very solid thriller that will keep you guessing.
I have to say this is one really well put together thriller, touching on a subject that has long been thorn in the side of governments around the world, wanting to show distain for the tobacco companies while at the same time enjoying the money it brings in from taxes.

The book revolves around Martin Muntor, who when diagnosed with lung cancer form second hand smoke, taking things in to his own hands he wages a one man war against society and the giants tobacco world.

Characters are well written and the plot is think and fast all keeping you on the edge of your seat right to the very end.
